World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is an annual celebration and global awareness day on March 21 officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. March 21 (3/21) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Take a look below to see how we celebrated in 2025!
WDSD Activity Kits
In 2022, DSACT created a World Down Syndrome Day Activity Kit program to provide a way for teachers to facilitate discussion about Down syndrome on or around World Down Syndrome Day. These kits include:
- A hardcover book featuring a character with Down syndrome or about inclusion
- Discussion questions based on the book
- Educational resources about Down syndrome
- A hard copy of the activities to share throughout the school
DSACT families can request a free activity kit for their child’s classroom or teachers can request for their classroom. In 2025, we sent 100 kits to classrooms across Central Texas.
A big thank you to Halff for their continued support and donations, allowing us to expand our World Down Syndrome Day Kits in 2026!
WDSD Recital
The 2025 World Down Syndrome Day Recital featured performances from some of our ongoing recreation programs including Creative Movement, Contemporary Dance, Family Music, Choir, Line Dancing, and Hip Hop. We also recognized the recent winners of the Lori Tullos Barta Outstanding Educator of the Year. Stay tuned for details on the 2026 WDSD Recital.
Advocacy Day At the Capitol
On March 19, 2025 DSACT and advocates from across the state joined together at the Capitol to meet with legislators to discuss current and potential legislation and hear official proclamations recognizing World Down Syndrome Day from both the Texas House of Representatives and Senate. It was a wonderful day of advocacy and unity across Down Syndrome Associations throughout the state.
