About Us

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide education, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, professionals, and the community while building public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.

Our Vision

Our Vision is a world in which all members, including those with Down syndrome, are accepted, valued for their uniqueness, respected for their abilities and contributions, and assured the opportunity and choice to create their own path to fulfillment and success.

Our work is focused around 4 strategies to achieve our vision:

1. Provide opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to learn and grow

2. Support families across the lifespan

3. Engage the community in inclusion, not just acceptance, for people with Down syndrome

4. Educate professionals on Down syndrome to ensure the best possible outcomes

Our Origin Story

The Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas (DSACT) has a rich history that dates back to 1991, when it was initially known as the Down Syndrome Support Group of Central Texas. It originated from the desire of parents in the local community to find support and play opportunities for their young children with Down Syndrome. Two of DSACT’s members, Ron and Kim Eudy, took the initiative to establish this small group following the birth of their daughter, Gracie.

Gracie’s enrollment in the Infant Parent Program in Austin, where she received weekly services, brought together a group of parents whose children were also in the 1-3 year age group. Recognizing the mutual benefits of joining forces, they decided to create a support group. Kim Eudy recalls, “We wanted an opportunity to learn from other parents and advocate as a group for our children. That was our motivation.”

Over time, DSACT steadily grew beyond its initial purpose, expanding its activities to encompass individuals of all ages. The organization engaged in community outreach initiatives, organized events, created printed newsletters, and developed fundraising plans. In 2003, we proudly adopted our current name, the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, affirming our commitment to promoting inclusion and highlighting the remarkable abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.

At DSACT, we strive to empower individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the broader community by providing valuable resources, support networks, and educational opportunities. Together, we work towards creating a society that embraces diversity and recognizes the unique strengths of every individual.

Funding

At DSACT, we rely on various sources to fund our operations, with a primary focus on our special events, such as the Cocktail Bash and the Buddy Walk®. These events play a crucial role in generating the necessary financial support. Additionally, we greatly appreciate the generous donations we receive from individuals within the general community, as well as sponsorships from local businesses.

It’s important to note that DSACT operates as a self-sustaining organization. We are not affiliated with United Way or any other external or government funding sources. The funds we raise remain within the Central Texas community, enabling us to directly impact and support individuals with Down syndrome and their families in our local area. To support our mission, we encourage you to make a donation here. Thank you for your generosity!
